Georgian, c. 1820. What kind of nut or seed is this? It's like two halves of a pistachio shell, but much smaller. I thought it might be Job's Tears? Or could it be an exotic seed brought back to England? The meaning was likely something similar to an acorn - symbolism: potential, humble beginnings. The frame is Pinchbeck, an extremely high-quality imitation gold that was invented in the 18th c. and survives/wears incredibly well. Locket is 5/8" tall, 7/8" with ring at top, which is coiled like a split ring. Closes securely.
