An open and airy crescent moon is formed from nine demantoid garnets and thirteen graduated seed pearls which swell toward the center. Demantoid garnets had only recently been discovered in Russia in the 1860s, and by the turn of the century their brilliant green color made them one of the most fashionable gemstones in Europe. The crescent moon symbolized feminine power, intuition, and the waxing and waning cycles of life, while pearls carried associations with purity, wisdom, and moonlight itself.
