This material covers the shell opening of the large sea-snail from the tropical waters around Australia, Tahiti, Fiji, and Samoa. Superstitious Victorians wore them to ward off “evil eye” curses. The look is described as "unsettling". Other names for this jewelry embellishment are “cat’s eye,” “evil eye,” and “Shiva’s eye.” Local people in the South Pacific operculum in jewelry during World War II when other materials were not available, and servicemen (both English and American) wanted souvenir jewelry to bring home. The dealer told me this is Victorian, but I suspect it's mid 20th century. Stamped "SILVER" so it wasn't made in the UK, and I don't know if it's sterling or a different less pure alloy. Stones are 5/8" to 7/8" wide and the center one is attached so it acts like a V-shaped feature. COOL.
