This is a mine-to-market locket. Instead of nuggets or geological cross-sections set whole, the front is carefully tiled with four squares of polished gold-in-quartz. Each segment carries its own pattern of pink and gray veining, so the face is like a patchwork of mineral specimens arranged with Victorian precision. The reverse is engraved with a flowing “PES” monogram, which gives it a more personal feel than most frontier souvenir pieces. Inside, the locket is missing its original glass lens but still opens smoothly.
