The first known use of malachite, a green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, dates to Ancient Egypt where it was mined to produce copper. Malachite is also one of the oldest known pigments - green paint made from the ground gemstone can be found decorating the millennia old tombs of Egyptian pharaohs as well as European oil paintings made as recently as the 17th century. To the New Age way of thinking, malachite has healing and restorative properties in addition to its historical significance. Malachite is believed to aid creativity, enhance intuition, and protect the wearer from negative energy. This c. 1870 pendant features a large polished malachite pebble with an exquisite floral motif endcap.
