Probably purchased as a souvenir of the Panama Canal, whose construction (1904-1914) captivated visitors around the world. On the back, the bezel is stamped PANAMA CANAL. The green moss agate resembles a jungle scene, which would have appealed to travelers, but moss agate isn't especially associated with Panama, so I don't think it was mined there. Fun fact about the canal: 1906 alone, a staggering 80% of the entire workforce was hospitalized due to malaria. Early hospitals unintentionally worsened the epidemic. Wards placed the legs of patient beds in small dishes of water to keep ants from crawling up, creating the perfect, stagnant breeding ground for deadly mosquitoes right next to vulnerable patients. This necklace comes WITHOUT malaria.
